Epidemic Interview

Based on questions from the WMA Membership, see topic:
Upcoming WMA Metal Interviews: Questions from WMA Membership wanted.

Band Name: Epidemic
Genre: Thrash Metal/Death Metal
Country: Israel
Samples: http://www.myspace.com/epidemiconline

Q: What is your opinion of the current Metal scene in your country?

A: The fans are growing, and metal is more acceptable than before. Everywhere you look there's another young teenager with the ''emo'' look.
And we believe the emo scene is just like the glam scene in the 80's.
It the first step before metal takes over.

Q: Your site mentions you've struggled because of a lack of metal presence in their country. What have you done to overcome this obstacle?

A: We are trying to get noticed outside Israel by E-mails as such.
Maybe a record label out there will understand our world-shattering intentions.
Meanwhile we're working on the Israeli crowd.

Q: Have you faced any other challenges such as blacklisting, censorship, etc.? In other words, What is it like to be a metal band in a deeply religious country like Israel?

A: Israel is not that religious…we sure do have a lot of problems because of religion. But the people here are not that religious. You can say that the Americans are a lot more religious than us. We don't Backlist artist here.

Q: Also, why did they choose to go straight Americanized thrash/death metal and not incorporate any elements of the music of their own country (ala System of a Down)?

A: There is no such thing as Israeli music. It always sounds like British-rock or Arabian music…just like everything else around here. And the American metal is the best metal ever. Jimmy Hendrix was an American...and the blues was born in America…so…

Q: Who started the band and how did you all get together?

A: Jonathan was musically unhappy with the way things where at the time of 1999. He decided to group with three more friends to put up a band.
With Wolf on bass, Erz on Drums and Joseph on guitar the band members were completed.

Q: How did you decide on the name for the band?

A: The band was originally made for destroying the current music flow.
And because metal seems to get a bad reputation for being ''evil'' or ''dangerous'' it felt like what we want to do is to release ''a metal epidemic'' upon the world of music.

Q: How often do you practice together?

A: Twice a week…but we would work a lot more if there's a show coming our way. But the main problem is our day jobs. We would play everyday if it wasn't for our day jobs.

Q: What's the biggest venue you've played?

A: Epidemic and other two northern Israel bands arranged a big show in Haifa after the war we had. It was a statement against our corrupted politicians.
Many came to give they're support.

Q: Can you describe the song writing process for your songs?

A: Usually Jonathan writes the lyrics & music and goes over everything with everyone. Sometime Erz writes the whole music and works it out with Jonathan's lyrics. But we are going to try everything in the future.

Q: What's the worst thing that's ever happened during a show?

A: We had lots of things happen to us. Cops stopped our show about a year ago…and it almost happened a few days ago as well. We had racial fights in our shows…that had nothing to do with us. We had a show canceled once because there was a war going on.

Q: What's the best thing that's ever happened during a show?

A: When the crowd screams ''Epidemic! Epidemic! Epidemic!'' it's enough. It doesn't get any better than this.
